1. EOS System

The purpose of the EOS detection unit designed and manufactured by Miretti is to protect those vehicles which operate in areas where risk of explosion is present and that are classified as Group II Category 3G. The system is able to detect the presence of dangerous concentrations of inflammable gas by means of a sensor contained in an Ex “d” explosion-proof casing equipped with a breathing device certified by the ATEX 94/9/CE
regulation.

1.2 Basic Principle of the 3G Category EOS Protection System

The Chosen protection system used is made-up by the combination of:

  • A truly secure gas detection system capable of isolating the vehicle from its feeding source when the gas or steam threshold reaches 25% of the propane’s LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) value.
  • An Ex "nR" limited breathing-system protection of the sparkling electric components or those generating over temperatures;
  • An “Ex n…” protection system to check the temperatures (ex. Oil pressure brake, engine water temperature, exhaust gas temperature, etc.)
  • An initial gas detection system’s proper functioning test checks the system s functioning, and when possible damages to the gas detection system during the test stage or when at regime occur, a Fault message is visualised on the display and the machine is stopped.
  • The machine shall be turned on only if the EOS System allows to do it.

Miretti Worldwide has more than 35 years of experience in providing custom-engineered solutions for diesel and electric forklifts, transportation equipment, nautical vessels and industrial machineries built by the most renowned manufacturers in the world. Miretti currently serves hundreds of customers in more than 50 countries and provides reliable protection in unpredictable environments.

For the materials handling industry, Miretti has just introduced - specifically dedicated to the USA and Australian market- a new line of counterbalanced electric and diesel explosion proof forklift trucks.  AC electric trucks can be ordered for capacities ranging from 3,000 to 9,000 lbs.  Diesel truck offering extends from 3,000 to 10,000 lbs.  Each truck will be certified for the required hazardous location by an Internationally Recognized Testing Laboratory.  For US markets, these trucks can be supplied with Class 1, Division 1 compliance certification.  Customers in Australia can order these trucks with Zone 1, Cat 2G certification as well.

EXPLOSION PROTECTION SYSTEM WITH INTEGRATED EMISSION CONTROL DEVICE

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates to explosion proof exhaust systems and in particular to one including a flame arrester integrated with an emission control device.
As many pieces of equipment (e.g., diesel operated forklifts or other pieces of machinery) are often operated in areas where gases and flammable substances are present, the heat generated by their engines may cause the gases, flammable material and/or dusts to ignite and/or explode. Hence  a reduction of the temperature to prevent sparks and to cut on the pollutants emitted is necessary. The latter would also stop the out pouring of further gases and flammable substances.
Nowadays the market mainly offers three separate units: (a) a cooling unit (with one or more cooling radiators coupled to the cylinder head of an engine); (b) a flame arresting unit which requires frequent cleaning and routine maintenance; and (c) a separate spark arresting unit.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Systems include an exhaust system mounted via explosion proof flanges to  the engine cylinder head. The exhaust system includes a first heat exchanger to cool the exhaust fumes prior to their passage through a flame arrester and an oxidizing device which functions as a flame arrester to oxidize the pollutants present in the exhaust fumes. The exhaust output from both devices is passed through a second heat exchanger and then again through a dry secondary cooler which includes spark arresting properties.
The flame arrester and oxidizing device includes metal foils coated by a noble metal (e.g., platinum, or the like). Being generally self-cleaning  this device eliminates the need for frequent cleaning and maintenance of the prior systems  thus functioning also as a remover of pollutants.
